Emily King – The Seven EP

With a Grammy nomination and US R&B chart success with her East Side Story album behind her, New Yorker, King, leaves J Records and goes it alone. And on the basis of the Seven EP, she could well do it all again by herself.

The seven (see what she did there?) tracks here have one reaching for all the usual superlatives: sophisticated, polished, mellow, adult. King is a certainly a class act with tracks like ‘Ever After’ and ‘Georgia’ showcasing a voice that can slide effortlessly from aching to kittenish.

The slick professionalism comes at the expense of a little edge. Parts of Seven glide by without making much of a ripple lyrically or melodically. I kept adding imaginary crackly loops or distorted samples to shake things up and enhance the rather straightforward production. Some remixes by Burial or Jamie Woon perhaps?
