Thick jazz bass sounds coupled by cooling harmonies like a popsicle in summer is the sensation of listening to the new Thundercat release, The Golden Age of Apocalypse. Fans of George Duke, EW&F (sans the horns), and Victor Wooten will appreciate the sounds (would be to the gods that you would go back and hear those artists if you don’t know their music). The project maintains a funky groove throughout, though it would have been nice to hear more of his vocals (especially on tracks like “Goldenboy”, which sounds inspired by Stevie Wonder). As summer draws to a close, Thundercat has released a project that will easily make a top R&B/fusion release for 2011 on many lists including mine.
