Lalah Hathaway – Where It All Begins

JW Richard October 25, 2011 1

Lalah Hathaway 6th release, Where it All Begins, brings her signature smooth-R&B sound and blends in more dance grooves and a touch of pop/country. The musical admonition, “Strong Woman”, begins the release with a hard-hitting, hip-hop/R&B feel. Then, like drifting into a completely different scene, the title track ushers in the aforementioned signature sound most associated with Lalah and it’s a perfect fit for her lyrical theme of self-examination.

Next up, three urban pop/dance singles with, “My Everything”, “Small of My Back”, and the first single, “If You Want To”. (Hopefully, “Small” will be served a deep house remix treatment soon–one can dream, right?) Another standout single on this release is the track, “Wrong Way”, an adult contemporary number with hooks that could easily go country. Lalah even revisits one of her own vocal performances from her debut in 1990 and re-records, “I’m Coming Back”, and with the addition of Rachell Ferrell on vocals, you already know that buying this CD was money well-spent.
