So many beats, so little time. Let’s give it a go.
After months of personal sorrow from deaths in his extended family, Australian-based artist, Monk Fly releases a collection of dark and brooding electronic rhythms called the Odes EP. The disc succeeds in revealing that particular ‘dark night of the soul’ involving grief , loss, and sometimes survivor guilt. Having lost my own father at age 59 to heart failure in April of this year, I know this pain well and completely relate to this project. He would have been 60 this November 6. Miss you, dad.
Hungarian producer now based in Berlin, Norbert Karsai aka Dnte has released a new project on Resistant Mindz Records (Germany). There’s the wonky grooves you expect from his sound, but with a more polished sound here than other recordings. Listen and grab for your own price, including free, at Bandcamp.
Speaking of releases from Berlin, you do have a copy of Robot Koch‘s latest, The Other Side, right? If not, get your ears around that sound by download or CD.
Next LP on cassette release from Insect Records imprint out of Austin, Texas, is Ntropy‘s set, DITHER, which drops on the elevens (11/11/11). Stay tuned to GLM for more info on that project including a podcast mixed up from the man himself, (iN) President, Butcher Bear.
The track list for J*Davey’s forthcoming set, New Designer Drug, has been released and I look forward to getting my hands on a copy. In fact, they’ve released a live performance video for the NDD track, “Queen of Wonderland” feat. Thundercat, courtesy of Pinboard Film and Red Bull Studios. The video is below.

Heading to Houston (11/5 at Fitzgerald’s Downstairs) and Austin, Texas (11/6 for Fun Fun Fun fest) this November is Austra (Paper Bag Records/Canada). If for some reason you haven’t heard of this trio’s moody yet danceable sound, check out “Beat and The Pulse” video below.
Leaving you today with Philly’s own, Has-Lo (Mello Music Group), who drops a new set on 11/15 with Conversation B. Bringing the tale of the tape..the cassette tape, that is..used for so many actual mixtapes, here’s the new track, “Maxell UR”.
As always, if you’ve got some tracks, get at me. Happy Halloween and go scare some kids.
