Bailiff – Red Balloon
From Chicago, Bailiff’s blend of lean progressive rock/blues has a driving rhythm section with stacked, processed vocals on this debut LP, Red Ballon. From the soulful title track and the slightly pop single, “In The Reverie”, to the anthemic, “When I Leave You will Stay”, these grooves are meaty like a thick stew. The track, “Eventually”, does seem to labor however under the muscular mid-tempo grind and would probably benefit from an edit of about a minute or so for the CD. Similarly, “Emptied Out”, even with its engaging sound, feels like a track in search of a hook and it never really comes. So while I’d like to hear some more obvious hooks at times, the musical performance is solid on this debut from Bailiff. If their live show holds the some wall of sound, that could be worth a ticket.
