Ruthie Foster serves up nothing but authentic blues/rock flavor with no filler for novelty. What you can always bank on with Foster is soul music that sticks to the ribs like your favorite comfort meal.
Recorded in New Orleans with the Funky Meters’ rhythm section (bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Russell Batiste, guitarist Dave Easley, as well as saxophonist James Rivers), Let it Burn does just that. From her soul-sanctified, Mavis Staples-inspired rendition of the Black Keys’ “Everlasting Light” and the stirring original, “Lord Remember Me” with The Blind Boys of Alabama, to the Aretha Franklin-inspired rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and a cover of the Band’s, “It Makes No Difference” that sounds like it came from Stax Records heyday. The perfect compliment throughout this recording to Foster’s vocals and guitar is the Hammond B3 work by Ike Stubblefield, who’s toured with such greats as Curtis Mayfield and Eric Clapton. Feels so good!
