The fourth project in the Exploded Drawing LP-on-Cassette series is Truth Against The World by Insect Records owner, Butcher Bear (Ben Webster). Marked by a dense combination of live drum trap, synth pad sounds, and other electronics, the majority of Truth comes off as explorations of the hand-clap/fist-and-knuckle “boom bap” sounds of hip-hop origins. Standouts in that vein are “Peep This Like A Secret”, “1 for J”, “Positive Force ATX”, and “Mountain Keep”. The single, “Close Curtains” with Guilty Simpson gains a new remix here as well. There’s a nice touch of jazz chording in “Some Called One”, and “U O A” feels inspired by a bit of Georgia Anne Muldrow’s instrumental work. Grab the cassette and get the digital with the purchase.
