Antibalas – Antibalas (Daptone Records)

JW Richard August 13, 2012 1

Their name, Antibalas, is Spanish for “bulletproof” and their latest self-titled release came out August 7, 2012, on the Daptone Records imprint. Under the direction of Austin, TX-based educator and multidisciplinary artist, Martin Perna, the Afro-Latin collective brings a scorching six-song set with musical foundations set by band directors/artists such as Fela Kuti, James Brown, and Eddie Palmieri. While it’s all a organic dance party with lyrics that decry personal and corporate greed, “Him Belly No Go Sweet” and is a particularly sweaty grind of early 70′s War-reminiscent funk that keeps you moving in mid-tempo groove. The disc’s last cut, “Sare Kon Kon”, will set your dance floor on fire.
